Green steel for new solutions in vehicle production

A pilot project with CO2-reduced steel from the EMW Steel Service Centre

Neunkirchen, 3rd April 2023. In the supply chains of the automotive industry, steel is one of the main sources of CO2 emissions. The independent EMW Steel Service Centre, based in the municipality of Neunkirchen in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in western Germany, has been supplying CO2-reduced steel since the end of 2022. This enables EMW to reliably procure green steel products for its customers. In turn, this facilitates the development and production of climate-neutral cars. As part of its decarbonisation measures, Mercedes-Benz has commissioned EMW to supply CO2-reduced steel.

Using the thin sheet metal from the slit strips supplied by EMW, Mercedes-Benz AG manufactures a structural part at its Sindelfingen plant to reinforce the underframe assembly of a range of its models. These include the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and E-Class, the Mercedes-Benz GLC, the Mercedes-AMG GT and the Mercedes-Benz EQC.
Reducing CO2 in supply chains is also important for electrified passenger cars, such as the Mercedes-Benz EQC. Currently, the steel industry is undergoing a comprehensive transition process towards CO2-neutral crude steel production in order to play a role in the decarbonisation of supply chains.
Car manufacturers are committed to the environment. They have multidimensional strategies that include all supply chains, including steel. All of the emissions must be transparent and traceable. The reduced carbon footprint of EMW Steel Service Centre's steel supplies is an important decarbonisation building block on the path to creating a sustainable value chain.
EMW Stahl Service GmbH is a business unit of the globally active SCHÄFER WERKE Group and supplies coils, slit strips, blanks and circular blanks to the steel processing industry.
